High Five: Five New Fragrances for Spring

TIME FOR SOMETHING NEW. Spring is always a time for renovation, you finally decide to get that hair cut, change your beauty routine, do that inevitable closet cleaning, and start searching for a new fragrance. Last weekend, while on my usual trip to Sephora, I was searching for mine. Last Spring was DKNY Pure, which I totally love, but in a world dominated by new and innovative products, does it makes sense to always opt for the same? With so many wonderful beauty products to explore aren't we loosing all the excitement of discovery by opting for the safest way? 

With this in mind, I took great delight in exploring all the fragrances released this Spring. I returned home with a bag full of tangled strips of card and five different testers. I chose based on the fragrance itself of course, but the bottles are important too.  During my teenage years I wore over and over the Jean Paul Gaultier corseted torso and later the classic bottle of Chanel Chance. Still drawn to both. 

But now I'm seeking a different perfume that could characterise me; and I'm definitely not ready to settle yet. I'm more looking towards a future of constantly evolving choices and purchases. 

After one week of new aromas, names and bottles wafting through my head here's the verdict!

1. PRADA L'Eau d'Iris - Prada's new limited edition fragrance is as seductive to the eye as to the nose. Inspired by spring flowers and the fusing of iris and laurel in the gardens of Tuscany. Crisp notes of iris and lily-of-the-valley with a accords of vanilla make it feminine but not too sweet.

2. BURBERRY Body Tender - The adjectives that best describe this new version of Body are tenderness, eternal youth, serenity, ease and charisma. It opens with fresh aromas of apple and rose with a sandalwood finish. Young but sophisticated, light but lasts long on skin.

3. CHLOÉ See by Chloé - The new fragrance is chic, elegant and energetic floral - fruity. Fresh notes of apple blossom lead to a floral heart of jasmine and ylang-ylang. It is fresh and light and very very young (maybe too much), great for everyday. Love the vintage birdcage inspired bottle.

4. MARC JACOBS Oh, Lola! Sunsheer Edition - Marc Jacob's perfumes exemplify the synthesis between sight and smell. This light floral/fruity edition, is fresher and sheer than its predecessor. It contains notes of raspberry and pear in the top, with a magnolia base. It smells lovely and it's more fruity at the start, then mellows into the floral notes with a very very light scent. It doesn't last 20 minutes on skin. I guess it is a good option for someone who is searching for a light fragrance instead of a perfume.  

5. STELLA McCARTNEY L.I.L.Y. Absolute - Together with Prada L'Eau d'Iris, this is one of my favourite bottles. Unlike the other perfumes I tested, this one is a very heavy and long lasting fragrance. This new interpretation takes the natural basis of the original, deepens it and turns it into an extremely sensual perfume for affirmed and self-assured women. The fragrance is darker, richer and more intriguing with accords of lily of the valley and pink pepper laid over a dark base of patchouli. This is definitely a perfume for night and although it isn't my type of fragrance it would suit perfectly someone who is searching for an intense but floral aroma. 

After testing these perfumes I'm in between Prada and Burberry. Have you tried any of those? Do you have a great suggestion for a Spring fragrance?

Pure White

I never thought of seeing myself saying this but I can't take this pure white nail polish off my nails. It's like my latest fascination. It's perfect for spring (even more with a little tan), it's simple, you can wear it for work or for a night out with friends, and it is absolutely chic.

I remember my mother wearing it when I was 5 so I always thought about white nails like if it was totally out. But now, I don't know if it's just a big white intoxication, I've decided to give white nail polish a try (with a matte top coat) and now I am totally addicted. I really can't wear any other colour.

But...yes, there's always a but...it's so difficult (read time consuming) to apply at home. And it never looks totally perfect. 

Anyway, I'm doing my best by keeping my nails at medium length (I think it gives a polished look with white), and doing all the steps for an almost perfect home manicure:

1. Base coat.

2. First nail polish coat.

3. Second nail polish coat.

4. Yes, if you are wearing OPI Alpine Snow like me, you're probably going for a third coat right now.

5. Finish with your top coat. I'm really into Matte About You from Essie, it looks very cool with white but it is totally up to you. 

Ah, and don't forget, let it dry completely between coats! 

And you? Do you have any special tricks or a method to apply "tough" nail polish?

Nunca pensei em ver-me a dizer isto mas a verdade é que não consigo tirar o branco puro das minhas unhas. É como que o meu mais novo fascínio. É perfeito para a Primavera (ainda mais com um ligeiro bronzeado), é simples, pode ser usado tanto para situações mais formais como para um programa com amigos, e é absolutamente chic.

Eu lembro-me da minha mãe usar verniz branco quando eu tinha aí uns cinco anos e sempre pensei nele como algo que já tinha passado o seu período de validade. Mas agora, não sei se é parte da minha grande intoxicação branca, decidi dar uma oportunidade ao verniz branco (com um acabamento mate) e estou completamente viciada. É que não consigo usar outra coisa. 

Mas...sim, há sempre um "mas"...é tão difícil (e consome uma boa meia hora) aplicá-lo em casa. E nunca fica completamente perfeito.

De qualquer modo eu vou dando o meu melhor, mantenho as unhas mais curtas (fica mais composto com o verniz branco), e sigo religiosamente estes passos para tentar obter uma manicure quase perfeita em casa:

1. Verniz base.

2. Primeira camada de verniz branco.

3. Segunda camada de verniz branco. 

4. Sim, se como eu estão a usar o OPI Alpine Snow, então é bastante provável que tenham de ir para a terceira camada de verniz.

5. Terminar com um top coat. Eu tenho usado o Matte About You da Essie porque adoro ver o acabamento mate com o branco mas isso depende completamente do vosso gosto.

Ah e não se esqueçam que entre camadas o verniz tem de secar completamente!

Meet the latest addition to my wardrobe – animal printed silk pyjama-pants. They're so effortless and elegant and the best is that they work really well with both heels and flats. Since I like to keep it simple I added a white t-shirt, white heels and my favourite jacket ever from MARNI x H&M. Instead of a classic everyday bag I decided to wear my perspex bag with stripped pouch to play with patterns. And it does the trick when accessorizing.

Aqui está uma das últimas novidades do meu roupeiro - calças estilo pijama em estampado animal. São casuais, elegantes e o melhor é que combinam bem tanto com sapatos rasos como com saltos. Uma vez que quis manter o resto simples, combinei com uma t-shirt branca, sapatos brancos e o meu casaco preferido da MARNI x H&M. Em vez de optar por uma mala clássica para o dia-a-dia, levei a minha clutch em perspex com forro às riscas para jogar com os padrões. E com pouco se torna um coordenado muito mais criativo.

What to Wear: Summer Festival

Spring is here and music festival season is in full swing so you are probably counting down the days to your favourite music fest. Since festival fashion is now an authentic dress code, and not just at festivals, it is not always easy to combine fashion and function. There is nothing worse than a wardrobe malfunction or walking around with blisters on your toes; I have compiled comfortable flats, pretty dresses, cool tees and statement accessories in four different looks. I promise you will feel like the ultimate music festival muse.

A Primavera chegou e com a época de festivais a chegar em força, estão, muito provavelmente a contar os dias para o vosso festival preferido. Uma vez que actualmente o vestuário de festival é quase que um dress code, e usado não só nos festivais, nem sempre é fácil combinar estilo e função no mesmo coordenado. E como não há nada pior que uma roupa desadequada ou um calçado que provoca bolhas nos pés; compilei sapatos rasos, vestidos leves, t-shirts cool e acessórios brilhantes em quatro looks diferentes. Prometo que se vão sentir a derradeira musa festivaleira.

At Coachella we saw a lot of cowboy style; boots, cut off jean shorts and plaid or fringe shirts. If you want to rock this style in a not so obvious outfit, I suggest this chiffon and lace top, which goes perfectly with a pair of cutoffs and ankle boots, add a little ofthe oriental trend with a silky kimono. It will protect you from the UV rays during the day and the little chill at night. Sunglasses are an essential accessory, and these round Ray Ban shades give an instant boho vibe. Since you will be walking around a lot, save your back and ditch the leather messenger for this perfectly sized MichaelKors cross-body bag in a vibrant colour. The ankle boots in an earth-tone are easy to match with everything and the tiny heel (extra help to elongate your legs!) will leave you looking amazing in a pair of short shorts like these worn-in-looking jean shorts. Denim shorts are a must because they go with everything.

O Coachella trouxe-nos o estilo cowboy com as botas, calções de ganga e camisas de franjas. One of this spring’s biggest trends is the 90’s and all the grunge and rock vibe we saw at Saint Laurent Paris and Dries Van Noten. To master this trend, start with a relaxed, loose-fitting tank, like this one from Religion during the day and layer up with this plaid shirt when the temperature drops at night. A sick pair of shades will give this look the extra kick of attitude. I love how this Lulu Guinness cross-body bag combines grunge and chic with the quiltedblack leather and golden accents. This festival-proof look is one of the most versatile of all festival looks. Wear it to a music fest, on that road trip along the coastline you have been planning, or even for a casual weekend; It has all covered.
